I’m interested but I’m worried- can I handle a pole or silk class? I don’t have good arm strength! I can’t even do one pull-up!
With the exception of a rare few, 95% of us couldn’t do a pull-up or trained our upper body, core and/or active flexibility in this way when we started out either! Strength happens when specific muscles are used regularly and as with any exercise, you will improve with time and dedication. You will have the satisfaction of being able to lift your own body given that pole or aerial fitness specifically condition pull-up prerequisites with various poses in a way that makes you forget you’re doing it. With consistency and grit, you’ll be able to do a pull-up when your muscles have worked for it. We promise!
What should I wear to class?
Dance, yoga, contortion, aerial apparatus and acrobatics classes: We recommend wearing athletic wear that allows for freedom of movement, such as loose jersey pants, shorts and tops. Avoid wearing jewelry or non-stretch clothing with zippers or buttons that could damage the equipment or injure you in a roll. Special equipment for dance classes: Knee pads and toe pads/socks are a must! If you don’t have knee pads, we can loan some at the studio.
KYT students should plan to wear a sporty top and bottom. Please note that your KYT may be spending some time upside down in a handstand or cartwheel, so plan accordingly with a fitted sports top or leotard underneath as appropriate.
Pole classes:
You will need skin to stick on the pole, so please plan to wear a sports bra and tight-fitting athletic shorts or pole or swim bottoms. You may need belly grip so don’t plan to have your belly covered, but you can wear a top over your sports bra if that will make you feel more comfortable. Don’t worry, our studio is a safe space! We’ve all seen it before and we know bodies come in various stages of grace and size! Special equipment: Do plan to bring your own pole grip. If you need some, we have some at the studio for sale ranging from HKD100–130. If you are taking any class with the word “exotic” or heelwork class, you have the option to bring your own heels and definitely plan to wear knee pads.
What should I bring to class?
Aside from your grip of choice, it's recommended to bring water and a prepared aerial/pole bag that has your grip aid (such as Dry-hands, rosin or other; please check with your instructor for specific recommendations), a small towel, socks and knee pads if you ever need them and hair bands to tie your hair back (some moves require neck grip). We also always welcome a positive attitude to each class. Don’t worry if you can’t do a pole move and you see someone else able to do it. That person probably has been training longer than you have and they were once in your shoes. Keep going!
How can I prepare for my first class?
To prepare for your first class, make sure to arrive at least 5 minutes before the class starts, remove any rings, watches or jewelry that might injure you or scratch the equipment, wipe off any excess body moisturizer and inform your instructor of any injuries or limitations. We have spray bottles for the poles and the mats and it is standard studio etiquette to spray down your equipment a minimum of two times during your session – before and after. The purple towels are for the poles and the other colored towels are for the mats. And have an open mind ready to learn and have fun!
Do I need any prior experience to start classes?
No prior experience is necessary! Our classes are designed to accommodate beginners and experienced practitioners alike. Our instructors will guide you through the fundamentals and help you progress at your own pace. Please refer to the section on levels. Do note that instructors will work with you at your level, often saying that beginners will do 1-3 combo moves and allowing more advanced students to do a full combination of 6-7 moves to work on their endurance and refinement of transitions. If you are a total newbie, do begin with an intro or newbie class or course.
Is there a weight limit for participating in aerial and pole fitness classes?
Our equipment is designed to support a wide range of body weights, but for safety reasons, we recommend participants weigh under 250 pounds for aerial classes and under 300 pounds for pole fitness classes.
Gripping the pole or the hoop is uncomfortable on my skin! Why am I getting bruises?
Newbies and beginners often get ‘pole kisses’ or bruises on the skin surface. It’s nothing to be worried about and in many classes it’s a ‘badge of courage’! With time, your skin becomes desensitized to gripping the apparatus in such a way that creates the bruise which is why you will notice more advanced polers completing tricks without bruising or feeling the ‘burn’. Think of it as ‘toughening ‘ your skin up. We promise it will go away! If you need help having your bruise fade away faster, check out this interesting article which includes mouthwash as a remedy!
Will I be able to do the moves and tricks right away?
As with any sport or practice, learning aerial and pole fitness techniques takes time and practice. Our instructors will provide step-by-step guidance and modifications to help you build the strength and skills needed to perform more advanced moves over time.
Are classes safe for beginners?
Safety is our top priority. Our instructors are highly trained professionals who will ensure that you learn proper technique and use the equipment safely. We also have crash mats and spotting techniques in place to minimize the risk of injury.
What if I have a fear of heights or falling?
It's normal to feel apprehensive when starting something new, especially aerial activities. Our instructors will provide a supportive and encouraging environment to help you overcome any fears and build confidence as you progress in your practice.
How often should I attend classes to see progress?
Consistency is key to seeing progress in your aerial and pole fitness journey. For newbies, we would recommend taking a course to provide consistency and attending at least once or twice a week to build strength, improve flexibility, and refine your skills. Practice sessions are also available to purchase for your own self-practice and conditioning. Just check out our Vibefam packages and schedules.
